POKOTABI / Bourbon
ブルボン
Perched on the 2 floor near Kyoto's Shichijo Senbon intersection, kissaten Bourbon serves comforting classics from yoshoku bento packed with hamburg steak and fried cutlets to Neapolitan spaghetti, omurice, and leisurely cups of coffee.
01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
Just off the Shichijo Senbon intersection, up a flight of stairs on the 2 floor, Bourbon pairs the unhurried atmosphere of a Showa-era kissaten with genuinely hearty cooking. A lunchtime favourite is the yoshoku bento, served in a divided jubako-style lunch box. Anchored by hearty mains like a hamburg steak, fried prawn, or cutlet, and rounded out with rice, miso soup, pickles, and home-style sides such as simmered kiriboshi daikon radish, it delivers the generous satisfaction of a dedicated diner. Dipping crisp fried cutlets into the rich demi-glace draped over the hamburg steak offers the quintessentially comforting appeal of Japanese Western-style fare.
Bourbon's charm is equally evident in the vast menu displayed across the wall. Traditional omurice and ketchup-glazed spaghetti can each be ordered with a hamburg steak on top for an indulgent combination. The kitchen caters to just about any everyday craving, turning out wok-tossed yakimeshi fried rice, yakisoba sets, katsu curry, oden, warming winter nabeyaki udon, and chilled summer somen. Those stopping in for a lighter bite in the morning or mid-afternoon can turn to thick-sliced toast or generously filled ham and mixed sandwiches paired with a drink.
Opening at 8:00, the cafe offers a classic morning service pairing toast and a boiled egg with hot coffee or tea. At lunch, an after-meal hot or iced coffee can be added for a modest supplement, allowing guests to linger over the end of their meal. Arranged with counter seating and window tables overlooking Shichijo Street, the interior preserves a traditional, smoking-permitted kissaten setting, and bills are settled in cash only. Whether serving as a familiar refuge for nearby workers or a low-key stop while exploring the Umekoji area, it provides a reassuringly constant presence.
